TUSCALOOSA— Shelton State Community Health and Wellness Division Chair Dr. Milady Murphy with this week’s personal best concerning adding fiber to your everyday diet.

“There are seven elements to good nutrition”, Murphy said. She said that fiber is one and it is found in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Murphy said that when fiber is consumed it has immediate benefits in the body. Fiber lowers the bad cholestorol, regulates blood sugar, builds up the immune system and increases the bodies motility.

“If you have questions on getting fiber in the diet, consult with your physician”, Murphy said.

According to the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society, women 50 and older should strive for 20 grams of fiber a day. Men should strive for 30 grams of fiber a day.

“So for those of us counting calories, let’s count grams of fiber too. Until next time, be safe and practice wellness”, Murphy said.
