RE-1 Valley School District’s Food Service Department was recently informed that it is the recipient of a $1,500 GoFundMe Help Feed School Kids Now! School Nutrition Foundation grant.
“We applaud your efforts to increase the availability of food to vulnerable children,” Patricia A. Montague, CA, CEO of the School Nutrition Foundation said in a letter to the district.
The Go Fund Me page was started by the School Nutriution Foundation when COVID-19 shutdowns began in March. Funds raised through the fundraiser are being distributed to districts that did emergency feeding during the shutdown.
According to Joleen Locke, RE-1’s director of food service, the money will go into the general fund and go towards food and supplies used to help feed the students in the district.
RE-1’s Food Service Department has been awarded $24,000 in grant money since March, all of which has been used for feeding children, either for food or supplies needed for the grab-and-go meals.
“We are very proud of the work we have done since March and continue to do through our Summer Food Service Program,” Locke said.
Grab-and-go meals are distributed from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the south parking lot at Sterling High School for all children ages 18 and under. Meals will be available through July 31.
In addition to receiving the SNF grant, Innoseal Systems will be sending RE-1 Food Service two professional sealing machines in order to help package and provide the food to children in the community.
“SNF wants America to know that school nutrition operators have joined the frontline with other first responders and need their own unique assistance in feeding the millions of children who are out of school,” Montague said.
SNF was able to provide grants to food nutrition operators thanks to friends across America and several partners. The foundation’s partners are comprised of the following generous donors: Chartwells, Cool School Café, General Mills, GenYOUTH, Hadley Farms, Handprynt, Innoseal, Jarrett Krosoczka, Lakeside Manufacturing, Nardone Brothers, National Dairy Council, No Kid Hungry, Nutrition for the Future, Share Our Strength and Super Bakery.
