The R&D Manager is responsible for managing a technical team in the development and implementation of Laird Superfood’s new product pipeline. They will support the development of new products from concept through to finished product for commercialization by leading through others as well as rolling up their sleeves and executing. The successful candidate will use their technical knowledge, leadership methods, and cross-functional collaboration skills to ensure Laird Superfood remains at the forefront of production innovation while at the same time maintaining the integrity, consistency, and quality our customers expect and the product margins our business model demands. Collaboratively support initial product development and formulation writing via bench top work through pilot work for product scale-up
Facilitate ideation process by driving R&D team to execute on stakeholder visions
Build, lead, and coach the R&D team to elevate team expertise as the company grows, as well as mature all lab processes and protocol
Act as key department driver in executing on the project management process
Collaborate with cross functional leaders to ensure that products are brought to market in agreement with all department needs and timelines
Work directly with vendors to identify the best quality raw ingredients and product specs; negotiate pricing and collaborate closely with Procurement to manage ingredient acquisition timelines
Comprehensively understand and manage the R&D budget including costs related to new product development, ingredient pricing and expense, new and changing formulation expense/price per unit
Collaborate with Compliance on FDA Claims Substantiation and Approval and Nutrition Fact Panels for product labeling, distribution and manufacturing processes, ensuring regulatory compliance and brand guardrails are maintained.
Understand marketplace trends, scientific research and corporate messaging as it relates to product formulation and design
Design and review in-house and 3rd party testing parameters – temperature, O2, light, pH, viscosity, and more as is relevant to specific product design
Continue to improve production and R&D processes through best practices
Ensure that strict hygiene food safety standards are met and quality and safety programs are followed.
Other duties as assigned
BS in Food Science, Food Engineering, Nutrition Sciences, or related field; Master’s preferred
7+ years experience in research & development in food industry; 2+ years of people leadership
Deep knowledge in food product design, formulation, ingredient functionality and interaction, process design, specifications, and manufacturing pilot runs
Proactive, self-starter, ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
Strong oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and superior organizational abilities.
Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, especially in leveraging excel tools for R&D processes and lab management
