But now that you can’t always get what you want at the supermarket, it’s time to remember that there are other foods that can be surprisingly good for us. “It’s unfortunate that some foods have attained the label of being a ‘superfood’ — a term that has no real meaning, just that they are rich in vitamins and beneficial nutrients,” the nutrition therapist Ian Marber says. “What’s often surprising to people is that many ordinary foods match them for benefits.” So what are they?

Sweet potatoes might be more fashionable, but a white spud almost matches them in terms of
