ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) – With Lent starting later this month, a local registered dietitian says it’s important to keep your health in mind before making any major changes to your diet.
Many people are planning to fast or make other major diet changes during the Lenten season.
But Rapides Nutrition Expert Shiloh Lancaster says it’s crucial to talk to your doctor before changing your diet or exercise routine.
According to Lancaster, changing your diet can change how you feel day to day and can even affect things like your metabolism and electrolytes.
She recommends talking to a registered dietitian and monitoring changes in your body during a diet change or fast.
Lancaster adds having a healthy diet is crucial to your well being and can increase the amount of energy you have during the day.
“A healthy diet is important to our overall health in regards to our moods in regards to our mental health, physical well being,” Lancaster said. “It helps us get through the day, gives us energy.”
Lancaster says fasting is not a great long term solution, as experts are still waiting on research.

All you need is a doctor’s referral to speak with a local dietitian.
If you have medical conditions that prevent you from fasting or that would make fasting a serious health risk, you can try other alternatives for Lent, such as cutting out unhealthy foods, drinking more water, or try eating smaller meals.
The Lenten season starts on February 26 this year and lasts until April 10. Some Christians observe Lent by not consuming meat on Fridays and fasting on certain days of the season, such as Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
